How can I tell which maps I have?
If you know your Garmin’s Model number, have a look at which map it came with by looking for your model number under the mapsets listed below:
- The following nüvi devices come preloaded with Garmin City Navigator Southern Africa NT:
2200, 2300, 2360LT, 2460LT 3760LT, 3790LT, 30, 40, 50, nüLink! 2390, 2495LT, 2595LT, 3490LT, 3590LT - The following nüvi devices come preloaded with Garmap Southern Africa / Sub-Saharan Africa Streetmaps: 200, 200W, 205, 205W, 215, 215W, 300, 310, 360, 500, 610, 660, 670, 710, 760, 860, 1200, 1200T, 1300, 1300T, 1310, 1410
- The following zûmo units come preloaded with Garmap Southern Africa / Sub-Saharan Africa Streetmaps: 220, 400, 450, 500, 550, 660
You can also look and see which map is loaded on your device, by doing the following:
On your Garmin Device go to the map info or myMaps menu. Depending on the device you have, this can be done either by going to Tools / Settings > Map > Info OR Settings > Map & Vehicle > myMaps.

How to update your maps:
As you know, we live in a society where things are constantly changing. What use to be an empty field is now a built up area with a maze of new streets. To ensure that you always have the latest available maps, do the following:
For Garmin City Navigator Southern Africa NT maps:
First you will need to create a myGarmin account, to do this simply follow the two steps below:
Step 1: Go to www.myGarmin.com
Step 2: Create a new account in the “Garmin Account sign in” section.
Next you will need to register your device. To register your device, follow these easy steps:
Step 1: Under the “myProducts” tab, click “Register”
Step 2: On the “Product Registration” page, click the category of the Garmin device you would like to register (i.e. Automotive, Fitness etc.)
Step 3: Ensure your Garmin device is connected to your computer via a USB cable and click on “Continue” at the bottom of the screen
Step 4: On the “myProducts page”, check your Garmin device information is correct and then click “Continue”
Step 5: Complete the required fields on the “Product Registration” page then click “Continue”
Step 6: The “Registration Complete” page will appear confirming the “Model”, “Serial Number” and “Unit ID” details
Now all that remains to be done is to download the latest software & maps:
Step 1: Make sure you are logged into your myGarmin account and that your device is connected to your computer via USB cable
Step 2: Click on the “myDashboard” tab on the top of the page
Step 3: On the “myDashboard” page the details of your registered device will be displayed. If there are any software or map updates available for your device, it will be displayed in a block on this page
Step 4: To update the unit software and or maps, simply select the “Update now” button in the respective block, and follow the onscreen instructions
Step 5: Allow the updates to complete before disconnecting your device
Step 6: Restart your device and allow all updates to install on the unit. Once this is done, your device will have the latest software and map data available.
Devices pre-loaded with Garmin City Naviogator Southern Africa Maps have free map updates untill the 31st of March 2013.
For Garmap Sub-Saharan Africa Streetmaps:
First you need to go to a Garmin Authorised reseller and purchase a Garmap Africa Series DVD, then follow the steps below to install and update the Garmap maps on your device:
Step 1: To update your Garmap maps you have install the latest version of Garmin Communicator plugin (http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/). Your GPS must be connected to your computer via USB cable while installation runs.
Step 2: After installing the Communicator Plugin you have to insert the Garmap Africa Series DVD into your computer’s DVD drive.The process for installation of your map will automatically start.
Step 3: The installation process should automatically pick up the Unit ID and you will have to manually type in the Unit Serial Number.
Step 4: If you are already registered on the Garmap database the next screen will give you the opportunity to verify the Username for your registered profile. If you are not registered, you will need to register before proceeding.
Step 5: If you have already purchased a upgrade coupon you will now select the “I have a coupon which I would like to redeem for this product”option and click submit.
Step 6: Type in your update coupon code in the “Redeem Coupon”box to redeem the upgrade coupon value.
Step 7: After typing in the coupon code, click on “Redeem” to redeem coupon – it will now display the coupon discount value in RED. If you agree with the value displayed in RED you can click on “Submit”.
Step 8: Please select the relevant map for your map upgrade.
*Please note: If you have a license for Garmap Streetmaps you will select Streetmaps as your upgrade choice.
Step 9: It should display a value of R0.00 for your upgrade coupon. Click on “Continue”.
Step 10: Your Product Serial Number and Unlock Key should now display. Please click “Continue”to finish the installation to your Device and Computer.
Step 11: Follow the WebUpdater installation process to make sure that your device software is up to date.
Step 12: Follow MapInstall instructions to load the map to your device.

With Lane Assist and Junction View, whether its Generic1 or photoReal2, ensures that you are guided to the correct lane when approaching a complex junction / intersection. While Junction View displays the upcoming junction for further assurance that you’re on the right track and in the correct lane. Another value added feature included is Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR)3, which will allow you to operate the nüvi with spoken commands, without taking your hands off the wheel.

Garmap Sub-Saharan Africa maps add impressive coverage throughout Southern Africa with a combined coverage of 29 countries, which includes 1,3 million kilometres of routable coverage, a massive 3,3 million kilometres of non-routable coverage and over half a million Points of Interest (POIs). Features such as Lane Assist, Junction View and Automatic Speech Recognition are not featured in this map set. |
